The Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation signifies a high level of professional education and a commitment to a course of continuing education. Persons who earn the CIC designation have indicated they recognize the need for practical insurance education through their careers as insurance professionals.

The CIC designation is earned by attending five, two-day institutes. At the conclusion of each institute, a rigorous examination must be passed. You must take five of the seven CIC institutes, and pass five examinations, within five calendar years after passing the first exam (for example: If you pass your first CIC exam in June 2020, you must pass five exams by December 31, 2025).

Once you attain the CIC designation, you must attend at least one CIC program annually to update. Note: Any "tenured CICs" can maintain their designation by paying CIC dues every year and attending a qualified program every other year. The recognition of "tenured" has been granted to CICs who have met the following criteria: 1. Held the designation for 25 or more years; 2. OR CICs who have not held the designation for 25+ years, but are 70 years old or older; 3. Designation is in good standing; 4. AND membership dues are current.

CIC examinations must be taken online through your PROfile page in the week following the class, beginning Monday at 12:01 PM through Thursday at 11:59 PM. Exam takers must submit a proctor request prior to the end of the class through their PROfile page. For more information on selecting a proctor and taking the online exam, click here.
